Baryte or Barite (BaSO4) is a mineral consisting of “Barium Sulfate”. Some 84% worldwide is used as a weighting agent for drilling fluids in oil and gas exploration. Other uses are in added-value applications which include the car, electronics, TV screen, rubber, and glass ceramics and paint industry, radiation shielding and medical applications (barium meals). The world’s leading producers are India, USA, Russia, Germany, Mexico, Ireland, Peru, Thailand, China, Italy and North Korea. In India, Andhra Pradesh contributes over 98% to the total production of Barytes. The world’s largest bedded Barytes deposit was discovered in Mangampet of Kodur taluk, kadapa district, Andhra Pradesh. This reserve contributes about 28% of the total known reserves of Barytes in the world.
